I was lucky enough to be chosen to review two products that I had actually been planning to buy for Christian: I was sent one each of Hot Dots Jr Let’s Master Kindergarten Math and Let’s Master Kindergarten Reading.
Each set contains one “Ace – the Teaching Talking Dog” pen and two booklets. Overall, each set contains 100 age-appropriate lessons on the topic. Your child can read the questions (or, in our case, you can read the questions to them) and then use the Ace pen to choose their answer. The pen responds with fun phrases, sounds, and lights depending on whether the answer is right or wrong. If they get it right, Ace says things like “Good job!” or “You got it!” as well as excited barking, drum rolls, and a green light. If they get it wrong, he might whimper or say”Incorrect” or “Nope” in addition to a red light.
The Reading set covers letter recognition, reading readiness, phonics, sight words, punctuation, and grammar. We worked through about half of the lessons in the 1st book and Christian not only loved the product, but did a great job with recognizing the correct answers. We will definitely be using this one a lot to help him with his language skills.
The Math set covers counting/numbers, patterns, time shapes/geometry, fractions, measurement, math facts, and money. We worked from the first book and skipped around a bit — focusing on the concepts that we have already been working on, such as counting, patterns, and shapes. Again, Christian really enjoyed the product and could usually figure out what the questions were without my having to prompt him just based on visual cues.
I’m glad that I got the opportunity to try these products for free, but having tried them I would definitely have paid for them as they are a quality product that teaches important concepts in a fun, engaging manner.
