One question that I am asked all the time is “what kind of legitimate work-at-home jobs are available out there?” Emphasis on ‘legitimate’. Despite the fact that there are countless men and women making some serious money working from home, there is still a lot of doubt out there about whether it is possible. They are essentially asking me…
I am here to tell you, in no uncertain terms, that it IS possible. You CAN make money from home. The real question is will you. And that is totally dependent on you and your efforts. Making money from home is just like making home in an office in that you have to be willing to get out there to find opportunities, get involved in them, and do what it takes to be successful. If you don’t take action, you won’t benefit from the opportunities that are out there.
So, what types of work at home jobs can you get? Well, that depends on you. Do you prefer to work offline or online? Do you want something where you set your own hours or are you looking for more of a telecommuting “office” job? Do you want to still have someone to answer to or do you want to be your own boss? There is something out there that fits each of these categories. (And let’s just clarify that I am talking about jobs/businesses. Things that put the WORK in ‘work at home”. Too many people operate under the assumption that working from home is not real work. Trust me — it is. You will not just be able to sit around eating pastries and watching the money roll in. It takes time and effort.) Anyways, let’s get back to it.
Let’s say you want to work offline. In this case, think about your skills. What do you have to offer that people typically pay for? Do you work well with children? Perhaps you have a ton of childcare experience and maybe even certification/formal education in child development or curriculum development. In that case, opening up a home-based daycare may be right up your alley. Do you have a special skill for something, such as cooking/baking, sewing, organizing, etc? If so, those are all extremely marketable skills that you can turn into a profitable business. And let’s not forget that there are actual “office” jobs that allow you to telecommute (another way of saying work from home), so if that’s your thing – go for it!
If you want to make money online, there are a ton of options available for you. You can even take your offline business and move it online. You can sell things on eBay and Etsy. If you are into blogging, you can monetize your blog (I will get more into that in later posts). You can get into affiliate marketing. You can be a virtual assistant. You can become a freelancer (writing, graphic design, web design, etc). You can offer financial services. You can do customer service. If you are competent in a subject, you can offer your tutoring services. You can even offer your coaching services if you feel that you have a great deal of knowledge in a non-academic area (e.g . financial health, relationships, marketing, etc). So many options!
Of course, you always have the option of going into direct sales. I like to think of it as the best of both worlds. You can work it offline via home parties and vendor events. You can also work it online by promoting on various sites and doing virtual parties. There is a wide array of direct sales and network marketing companies out there for you to check out. Later I will be sharing what I think are the important things to consider when you are trying to find the perfect direct sales/network marketing opportunity (like the one I choose to align myself with). But for now, think about what it is that you are looking for in a work at home job. What do you want your day to look like? What do you imagine yourself doing and actually enjoying? What job features are most important to you? Steady hours? Benefits? Flexibility? Freedom? No cap on how much you can earn? Ability to be creative? Utilizing your skills? But first, answer this question in the comments below: How do you think your life would change if you were able to work from home full-time?
